Bearna-na Forbacha played Annaghdown in the Under 12 League Group 3 Shield final in blustery conditions in Carnmore on Saturday 23rd Sept . The wind made scoring a lottery in the game but both teams served up a very close, entertaining game of hurling. Bearna-na Forbacha played with the wind in the first half and as expected most of the play was down in the Annaghdown half of the field. Annaghdown defended in the first half heroically, their goalie made a couple of fine saves and Annaghdown held Bearna-na Forbacha to a 0-05 to 0-01 lead at half time. It was difficult to imagine that lead being enough with the strong Autumn wind to favour Annaghdown in the second half. Best for Bearna-na Forbacha in that first half were the rock solid full back Luke Power plus the dependable Eoghan O’Siochan at wing back. They were ably supported by Senan McDonnell in midfield and Sean Dunne at centre forward whose 3 frees in that first half were vital for Bearna-na Forbacha in building up the narrow wind assisted lead.

The second half had a similar pattern to the first half in that a lot of the play was now in the Bearna-na Forbacha half of the field. Annaghdown had a few chances and frees but didn’t make those chances count on the scoreboard. Midway through the second half with scoring opportunities at a premium, Kieran Walsh, moving from goals to midfield for the second half, set up the elusive & skilful Johnny Kelly Greally for a goal that turned out to be the critical score of the game. That score settled the seasiders into a 1-5 to 0-1 point lead. Bearna-na Forbacha ran out worthy winners on a scoreline of 1-5 to 0-2 points in a game that was closer than the score line suggested. In the second half Bearna-na Forbacha were well served by Jack Allen’s tiger like defending and Stevie Healy and Ross Bradley who worked tirelessly in attack. After the game, Niall Dunne, captain of the Bearna-na Forbacha team received the shield trophy from Pauric Lohan, Galway Juvenile Chairman, and Luke Power received the MOTM award from Tom Monaghan, on behalf of sponsors Ocean Hygiene.
